" O Meri Jaane Jaan "
Tan "Liz" Lizhen is a Korean fanatic who grew up all her sheltered life having a racial bias against Indians. She often comes into conflict with her Bollywood loving Indian neighbour Ranjeet, with Liz often being the instigator.
One fine day, the universe had enough of her antics and decides to punish her by sending her into Ranjeet's Bollywood film, disrupting the plot. Her only way out of the film is to work with Ranjeet as well as the Bollywood Hero Amir, to reunite him with his true love before she can get out of the film.
As someone who likes creatively challenging projects, I was immediately drawn to the story of 'O Meri Jaane Jaan' just by hearing about the pitch. The idea of a character entering a film world has been done before in movies such as 'Purple Rose of Cairo' and 'Last Action Hero' but the twist that the pitch had was that it has Asian and local flavors infused in the plotline, where a racially prejudiced girl enters her neighbor's Bollywood movie.
The notion and challenge of having to make a Bollywood musical on a minuscule budget was an immense challenge, and I relish the challenge. It was a dream for me to undertake a musical film ever since I entered film school, and the story and genre have so much to play with; the colors, the music and the 'cheese' associated with the genre of Bollywood.
While first undertaking the project, I thought that this would be a typical musical, a short film lampooning the style of Bollywood, maybe do a little dance around the coconut tree once in a while. However, as I delved deeper into the style of Bollywood cinema, I found that Bollywood movies are equally or if not much more impressive in terms of scale and the costumes they had as well as the high points of emotional beats. It is a genre that does not take itself seriously, instead, it serves as a form of escapism for the masses. With all of this in mind, we set out to make a film that feels truly Singaporean, but also pay homage to Indian cinema.
'O Meri Jaane Jaan' while being a lighthearted romantic comedy, touches on serious topics in Singaporean society that has gone unnoticed by the unobservant. Microaggressions and small acts of racism do happen in this little Island of ours, and through the romantic tale of 'O Meri Jaane Jaan', while entertaining the masses, we want this film to also bring awareness on the subject matter.
Secondly, 'O Meri Jaane Jaan' is intended to serve as a starting base for people who do not understand or are not into Bollywood, for them to be introduced to this form of cinema and to give World cinema like this genre a chance.
